The preposterous employment of Putin’s lookalikes, one situated in Dagestan and the other within the Kremlin, need not even be broached. Reports indicate that there is a significant amount of confusion regarding the status of Russian General Sergei Surovikin, as his daughter claims he is working and everything is fine, while other sources suggest that he has been arrested due to his alleged involvement in Yevgeny Prigozhin’s recent coup attempt. Exclusive CNN documents reveal that Gen. Sergey Surovikin, a high-ranking Russian military commander, had a clandestine affiliation as a VIP member of the notorious private military group Wagner. The defense ministry has not issued an official statement regarding the reported arrest of “General Armageddon,” who has been absent from public view since the Saturday when the Wagner PMC leader initiated an armed uprising against Vladimir Putin.

Few days ago, Putin’s double successfully fulfilled all of his official engagements amidst a complex and emotionally charged situation caused by a failed military rebellion. Despite the impossibility of fully replicating Putin’s demeanor in the aftermath of the crisis, the double’s performance was remarkable. Having experienced the mutiny firsthand, he convincingly portrayed the despondency of the president while attempting to project a sense of triumph and optimism. The speech delivered to law enforcement and military personnel, which Putin had a hand in crafting, aimed to reframe the setback as a victory. Although the spectacle appeared ludicrous, there were limited alternatives available. Lukashenko’s statement, titled “The True Account of Events,” is overwhelmingly filled with falsehoods, making up about 90% of its content. The entire narrative, including dialogues, positions of the parties involved, and even the chronology, is steeped in deception. Lukashenko likely took the time between Monday evening and Tuesday to concoct a fictionalized version of the rebellion and his role in it. At the request of Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Lukashenko refrained from mentioning his name while presenting his perspective, which he promptly agreed to. One of the false claims made by Lukashenko is that Prigozhin did not demand the removal and resignations of Shoigu and Gerasimov, but this assertion lacks evidence. Although Lukashenko provided assurances, Putin insisted on breaking the previously made promise. Lukashenko’s guarantees hold no real value. While he confirmed the invitation for Prigozhin and a group of Wagnerites to relocate to Belarus, he can change his stance at any moment, citing various seemingly valid reasons.

However, Prigozhin should not be excessively concerned. Yuri Kovalchuk, a close associate of Putin, has had at least seven phone conversations with him in the past two days. Acting on behalf of the president, Kovalchuk is attempting to amicably resolve the issue of transferring control over cash, gold, platinum reserves, and other assets held by the Wagner PMC in the Central African Republic. This transfer would be necessary in the event of Putin, his family, and associates needing to evacuate. So far, no mutually agreeable compromise has been reached.Interestingly, both Prigozhin and Shoigu hold secrets that have the potential to greatly affect the stability of Russia’s power structure, secrets that are known only to Vladimir Putin. Putin maintains that the government’s system of checks and balances provides effective protection for individuals within the system, shielding them from his direct influence. However, this same system also exposes his weaknesses and creates a dependence on nearly every participant within it.

Lukashenko has made it clear that he does not support any operations conducted by the Wagner PMC within Belarusian territory. He allows only symbolic representation of the PMC and a small faction of its rebellious leadership. The Republic of Belarus will serve solely as a logistical hub under strict supervision. Prigozhin has offered Lukashenko protection against potential violations of Belarus’ territorial integrity by the current Russian leadership. However, Lukashenko has yet to provide a definitive response, indicating his reluctance for extensive cooperation with the dissident faction of the Wagner PMC. Nevertheless, he remains interested in staying informed about their plans. In his recent statement, Prigozhin outlined his position, albeit with distortions of reality. During the council of Wagner PMC commanders on June 23 and his parting speech that evening, Prigozhin explicitly promised, in the presence of numerous witnesses, to forcefully bring Putin to Red Square and publicly humiliate him nationwide. This bold declaration, enthusiastically supported by those present, starkly contradicts his claim of having no plans to overthrow the president. The verbatim account of Prigozhin’s promise reached Vladimir Putin, leaving him deeply saddened by the betrayal of a former “confidant” who had repeatedly pledged loyalty.

After Prigozhin’s statement, President Putin considered the need to express his own position and outline his stance. However, he adamantly refused to do so. As a result, a modified recording of the president’s doppelgänger was decided to be presented. This recording was originally made on the evening of June 24 after the conclusion of the rebellion, but the president had rejected it at that time and prohibited its dissemination. The recording was subsequently edited to align with the current circumstances and then broadcasted. It is worth noting that when the final version of the edited “address” was shown to Patrushev, he burst into laughter like never before. Within the Presidential Administration, the video was humorously referred to as a stand-up performance. Despite this characterization, it was still aired. Recent developments have not only exposed the vulnerability of Vladimir Putin’s central authority but have also revealed the entire system as a delicate house of cards, precariously poised on the brink of collapse. Only a few remaining factors are needed to trigger its downfall.
