Vasily Nebenzya, the UN representative for Russia, announced a forthcoming informal meeting in early April to discuss “the real situation with Ukrainian children taken to Russia.” This announcement comes on the heels of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, the children’s rights commissioner, prompting strong responses from Russian officials. In the meantime, Kremlin-appointed administration officials are aiding in the deportation of Ukrainian children. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov made it clear that the joint statement issued by Putin and Xi Jinping, which condemns nuclear war as inadmissible, is a direct message to the United States. Moscow and Beijing have called on Washington to prioritize de-escalation and strengthen strategic stability. Ryabkov has also warned the United States against flying drones in the Black Sea, as it could provoke retaliatory measures from Moscow. He further cautioned the United States against testing Russia’s patience, reminding them that the security of the Russian Federation will be ensured by any means necessary.
