President Nikola Sandulović: “Firstly, on my way out of Serbia, the Serbian police held me at the border for 4 hours, claiming to be checking my identity. On my way back, at the same border crossing Merdare, the same team of border police that was present when I left for Kosovo waited for me, indicating that they knew who I was. Again, there was the same 2-hour delay, and then a police officer approached me and said that members of BIA had called them and that they were coming to have an informational conversation with me, and I had to wait for them.

After some time, two young men came up to me and said that we should go to the office upstairs to have a conversation. When I asked who they were, what their names were, and why they needed to talk to me, they didn’t give me any answers. They said their names were not important. When I insisted that they show me their official identification so that I could determine who I was speaking with, they produced their identification by covering their pictures, names, and badge numbers with one hand, and I could only see part of it where it said BIA (Serbian Security Intelligence Agency). They took my phone away when I asked to call a lawyer and locked it in a drawer. The conversation began in a provocative tone with questions about who I had talked to, who I had met with, who was from the American administration, who was from foreign diplomats at the conference, who were all the Republicans from the region, where I slept, who organized the conference, what were the reactions of the people present at the conference, why I support Kosovo as an independent state when it is an integral part of Serbia, why I am oriented towards America and its administration, what the signed declaration between Republicans of Serbia and Kosovo means, and what I would do if I came to power regarding the independence of Kosovo. I want to emphasize that in their provocative questions, I noticed more than obvious hostility towards America and their stance on Kosovo as an inseparable part of Serbia! They pointed this out to me several times, and I repeatedly replied that everything regarding Kosovo was finished in 1999! One of them went out of the office several times and spoke vehemently on his mobile phone, holding his head, not knowing that one of our Republican Party members was watching him from his car the whole time.

At the end of the conversation, which lasted 3 hours, they gave me what to sign, refusing to sign themselves as the official person who had talked to me. I also asked them to give me one of the 3 copies of my statement that they printed and that I signed, which they also refused, despite my statement that they were obliged by law to give it to me. Their response was that it was a secret, that they were secret police, and that it could not be made public! They did everything to ensure that I had no evidence of my detention, which was nearly 6 hours, that it was unknown who talked to me, and what I said during that investigation, not conversation. I emphasize that throughout that STALINIST interrogation, they tried to plant false information in me and make me talk about things that I had no knowledge of, and I categorically denied their claims.”
