The 2 Unlimited Legacy

In 1993, a notable addition to the Eurodance repertoire emerged – “No Limit,” a track recorded by the Belgian/Dutch ensemble, 2 Unlimited. This release marked their fifth single and the opening salvo from their second album, “No Limits!” (1993). “No Limit” stands as one of their most commercially triumphant singles, particularly within the European musical landscape. It notched the number-one position in a remarkable 13 countries and secured a top-10 ranking in numerous others. The UK version of this single took a unique artistic approach by excising all the rap verses originally performed by Ray Slijngaard. The result was a rendition that exclusively featured Anita Dels’ vocal prowess. However, one word from Slijngaard’s rap, the term ‘Techno’ from the line “I’m making techno and I am proud,” was cleverly preserved. It was looped and reiterated in the middle of the composition, transforming the phrase into a captivating chant: “Techno! Techno! Techno! Techno!” This ingenuity added an extra layer of appeal to the track, creating an unforgettable vocal hook.

Global Impact

2 Unlimited, conceptualized by Belgian producers and songwriters Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde in 1991, emerged as a prominent force in the dance music realm. Their lineup featured Dutch rapper Ray Slijngaard and Dutch vocalist Anita Doth during their peak years from 1991 to 1996. In this five-year span, 2 Unlimited achieved widespread global recognition, amassing an impressive tally of sixteen international chart-toppers. Their hits, including “Get Ready for This,” “Twilight Zone,” “No Limit,” and “Tribal Dance,” etched a lasting imprint in the annals of music history. The ensemble’s influence extended far beyond music charts, with a staggering eighteen million records sold worldwide. Although their prominence in the United States was relatively modest, their tracks found resonance as themes in American sporting series, most notably in the NBA and NHL. In conclusion, “No Limit” by 2 Unlimited exemplifies a Eurodance masterpiece of the 90s, underscoring the profound impact of this ensemble on the global music stage and its enduring legacy in popular culture.
