Putin’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has been appointed as Putin’s emissary to address the Security Council, even though Lavrov had previously stormed out of the Council when presented with evidence of Russia’s atrocities against Ukraine. Moreover, Putin has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed against non-combatant civilians in Ukraine. It is incumbent upon the United States to exercise its veto power and use its influence to prevent Putin’s ally from assuming the Presidency of the UN’s Security Council and misusing the platform to justify Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

The Security Council, consisting of the five permanent members – the US, China, France, Russia, and the UK – wields immense power, with each member having the ability to veto any resolution. However, since Putin’s return to office in 2012, Russia has exploited its veto power a staggering 24 times, or twice annually, while China has used its power ten times or once per year. In contrast, the US has used its veto power only three times in the past decade. The article also exposes Russia’s breach of Article 27 of the UN Charter, which requires a member state that is a party to a dispute to abstain from voting. Despite being a party to the conflict and an aggressor nation, Russia vetoed a draft resolution presented by Albania and the US to terminate the Russian Federation’s military incursion into Ukraine, which had received backing from 11 Security Council members. China, India, and the United Arab Emirates abstained from the proposal. The article also sheds light on Russia’s exploitation of the UN to push an inaccurate counter-narrative of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, propaganda regarding the “evil Ukrainian regime,” and their purported “peaceful intentions,” as well as other absurd meetings. Furthermore, Russia has never been acknowledged as a legitimate UN member state, let alone a member of the UN Security Council. It is of utmost importance that the US utilizes its influence and veto power to prevent Putin’s henchman from taking the reins of the UN’s Security Council and abusing the platform to gloss over Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
