Russia’s Formidable War Machine

New York ( —

Yevgeny Prigozhin, a prominent figure within Russia’s oligarchy, exercises command over the notorious mercenary group known as Wagner, and maintains a close and influential association with Vladimir Putin. His epithet as “Putin’s chef” stems from his ownership of restaurants and catering enterprises that cater to the Kremlin. Currently embarking on a comprehensive nationwide tour throughout Russia, Prigozhin appears primarily motivated to furnish an unfiltered portrayal of the frontline conditions to the Russian populace. Significantly, he exhibits unwavering support for the implementation of a broad-based mobilization effort and the restoration of capital punishment. Following the withdrawal of his mercenary forces from the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Prigozhin has embarked on a multifaceted endeavor named “Wagner: Second Front,” which he presents across various Russian cities. Speculation suggests that this “working trip” serves the dual purposes of fostering military-patriotic education among the younger generation and augmenting public awareness regarding the adversities confronting Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Prigozhin’s protracted discontentment with the Ministry of Defense’s dissemination of selective information is well-documented. He openly articulates his grievances, often resorting to the use of profane language, colloquially known as “Russian Mat,” exclusive to the Russian language. It is noteworthy that Prigozhin’s recent press conferences, held in cities including Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, and Nizhny Novgorod, adhere to a consistent narrative. Clad in an attire characterized by jeans and a quilted jacket, he confidently asserts before assembled journalists that the conflict will endure for an extended duration, strongly urging Russia to promptly institute a comprehensive mobilization effort. Furthermore, he persistently advocates for the reinstatement of the death penalty.

Recent developments reveal a concerning escalation in the conflict, with a notable attack on Kyiv involving 15 cruise missiles and 18 Shahed drones launched by Russian forces. Despite this assault, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintains that Ukrainian air defenses effectively intercepted and neutralized all enemy airborne threats. Meanwhile, in Belgorod Shebekino, intense clashes are unfolding, leading to a dire situation that necessitates the evacuation of residents. Despite authorities’ denial of infiltrating saboteurs, the gravity of the circumstances cannot be overlooked. Since May 31, Shebekino, a city in the Belgorod Region, has been heavily bombarded. Social media platforms have been flooded with accounts of these incidents, including reports of a burning police station in Shebekino and successful defense by the Russian Armed Forces against enemy tank breakthroughs. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have deployed anti-personnel mines codenamed “Petal.” According to a local resident, Russian military equipment entered Shebekino on Thursday morning. She stated, “From the Ukrainian side, there is continuous firing of ‘grads’ around the city. We don’t have any military bases here, only residential buildings. There were attacks during the night, waking us up at 3:00 AM. The intensity of the rumbling made us feel the need to seek shelter in the basement.”

Another resident of Shebekino reported that nothing is functioning in the city, including shops, enterprises, and public transport. She described the city as empty, with no electricity. However, firing had ceased for the past 40 minutes, and she confirmed that Ukrainian tanks had not breached the city. It was discovered that Russian propaganda outlets have provided minimal coverage of the events in Shebekino. Channel One’s morning news segment dedicated a mere 56 seconds to the situation. On “Rossiya-1,” “Vesti” referred to the attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Shebekino as “terrorist” but allocated only about a minute to the incident. NTV’s 8-hour program “Today” made no mention of Shebekino.

While residents desperately seek ways to evacuate their relatives from Shebekino and its surroundings, local authorities continue to deny the presence of Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Belgorod region. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov stated emphatically, “There was and is no enemy present within the territory of the Belgorod region.” In a statement released on Thursday morning, the “Russian Volunteer Corps” announced the start of the “second phase” of the operation in the Belgorod region. Urging residents to stay in their homes or seek cover, the RDK emphasized that their conflict is not with civilians. Metadata indicates that the accompanying video was recorded around 5 am on Thursday.

Examining the images of Mr. Putin, I searched for any semblance of humanity, reflecting upon the profound statement made by Mrs. Margaret Thatcher about Putin’s brutal nature two decades ago. The West, however, was incredibly naive at the time, underestimating the accuracy and wisdom of her words. Recently, Vladimir Putin made a peculiar decision to delegate his responsibilities to a doppelganger to preside over two significant events. The first event was a virtual conference with government officials, during which the double convincingly portrayed the role of the president. The second event was a formal meeting with President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea, interestingly referred to by Putin as “Papuan” for undisclosed reasons.

The meeting between Putin’s double and President Afwerki proceeded without notable incidents. Meanwhile, the actual President Putin engaged in a video conference with a select group of trusted individuals from the nation’s leadership. These exclusive gatherings are rare and reserved for urgent matters that have significant implications for the country and its governance. During this session, the focus revolved around a proposal received from Chinese counterparts a day prior. The proposal suggests that Russia withdraw its troops to the borders as of February 23, 2022, while allowing the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LDPR) to remain within their borders until the same date, serving as a transitional arrangement lasting up to five years. Afterward, these regions would revert to Ukraine under conditions of limited autonomy. The issue of Crimea remains a subject of ongoing contention and was not addressed during the video conference. The proposal received from Chinese counterparts sparked intense discussions among the trusted individuals present, reflecting the complexity and significance of the matter at hand. The decision regarding the proposal’s acceptance or rejection would undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for Russia’s foreign relations and internal dynamics. As discussions continued, Putin’s involvement and final verdict on the proposal remained eagerly anticipated, with the potential to shape the future course of the nation’s geopolitical landscape.
