Josep Borrell Holds His Protective Hand Over Dictator Milorad Dodik

Critics have asserted that there were a number of cover-ups in the European Union’s Brussels and more bad news for Heiko Maas, as so far Josep Borrell has prevented EU sanctions against Dodik. Pressure on the Serb dictator Dodik came from two sources, one from German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, the other most especially, and increasingly from the U.S. government. However, Josep Borrell was reluctant to make any step which involved EU sanctions on Milorad Dodik. Why is Josep Borrell protecting a murderous dictator? Well, only Josep Borrell knows this answer. Milorad Dodik knew that he was not in trouble on the EU diplomatic front, even Heiko Maas threatened to cut financial support to Bosnia, labelling calls for parts of Bosnia to secede or for the Balkan state to be weakened “irresponsible and unacceptable” and naming Bosnian Serb dictator Milorad Dodik as a particular culprit. The name of Milorad Dodik for many it will not be known, but he´s considered one of the most bloodthirsty dictators in the Balkans. Dodik’s rise to the leadership of the Republika Srpska marked the beginning of a virulent strain of Serbian nationalism that will lead to the disintegration of Bosnia, but Dodik has nothing to worry about, as Josep Borrell still holds his protective hand over Dodik. The EU already failed in the Republika Srpska in the case David Dragicevic and cannot now afford to make any mistakes. While the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy responded to the European sanctions proposal against Dodik with some interest, it was not followed through. How credible will the EU be in interventions in other regions of the world if it is unable to manage its own backyard?

The EU’s Humiliating Failure in Republika Srpska

Its citizens are tired, confused and in fear of a possible new war, but still there´s no EU outrage about the brutal plans of new Serb ethnic cleansing in Bosnia by the criminal Dodik regime. The international community reacted with considerable alarm after Bosnian Serbs at the end of July blocked the work of the central government while Dodik announced measures aimed at unraveling key state institutions. Central to their anxieties was the belief that a new conflict in Bosnia could easily spill over into neighbouring countries. The most controversial test case for the EU in the Balkans is undoubtedly that of prosecuting crimes committed by the regime of Milorad Dodik.

Josep Borrell Fontelles is a Spanish politician serving as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy since 1 December 2019. A member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), he served as President of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2007 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in the Government of Spain from 2018 to 2019. Born and raised in the Catalan village of La Pobla de Segur, Borrell, aeronautical engineer and economist by training as well as professor of mathematics. He entered politics in the 1970s as a member of the PSOE Spain’s transition to democracy, and went on to serve in several prominent positions during the governments of Felipe González, first within the Ministry of Economy and Finance as General Secretary for the Budget and Public Spending (1982–1984) and Secretary of State for Finance (1984–1991), then joining the Council of Ministers as Minister of Public Works and Transport (1991–1996). In the opposition after the 1996 election, Borrell unexpectedly won the PSOE primary in 1998 and became Leader of the Opposition and the designated prime ministerial candidate of the party until resigning in 1999. He then relocated to European politics, becoming an MEP during the 2004–2009 legislative period and serving as President of the European Parliament for the first half of the term. He returned to the Spanish Council of Ministers in June 2018, when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation in the Sánchez government. In July 2019, Borrell was announced as the European Council’s nominee to be appointed as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He took office in December 2019.
