He emphasized that his country’s security concerns are taken into account, not just the need to support Ukraine. He stated that the priority of the German government is the security of Germany and that their goal is to prevent Russia from expanding its borders through the use of force. He added that the Germans want peace in Europe and that the war does not get closer. He stated that Germany’s foreign policy is based on three principles – providing humanitarian, financial and military-technical support to Ukraine, preventing the escalation of the conflict, and close coordination with allies and partners led by the United States. He also said that the German government has been making informed decisions on this issue since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, and that the war was provoked by the President of Russia. According to the Wall Street Journal, Scholz played a key role in lifting the unofficial taboo on the delivery of Western tanks to Ukraine. He reportedly convinced US President Joe Biden of the need to supply American tanks, who initially doubted the decision.
