As prosecutors in Milan widen their investigation into the “Sarajevo Safari”—a sick tourism trade where wealthy foreigners allegedly paid to hunt civilians—the finger of blame is no longer pointing just at the gunmen in the trenches. It is pointing directly at the current President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.

For three decades, the world called it war. Now, witnesses call it a sport for “human scum,” and they are demanding that the man who now walks the red carpets of Europe face the ghosts of the children killed under his political watch.

The Pricing of a Child’s Life

The allegations filed in Milan paint a picture of depravity that defies human comprehension. According to the complaint, a “price list” existed for the VIP hunters who visited the Serb positions overlooking the besieged city. It cost a certain amount to kill a man. It cost more to kill a woman. But the highest price—the premium fee paid by these “safari tourists”—was to kill a child.

Italian lawyers are now asking a question that shakes the foundations of Belgrade: Did Aleksandar Vučić help organize these trips?

During the siege, Vučić was a senior member of the ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party. He was the right-hand man to Vojislav Šešelj, a convicted war criminal. He walked these lines. He visited these bunkers. The new legal complaints allege that Vučić was not just a spectator, but a facilitator—a man who helped clear the path for these foreign “human hunters” to enter the zone.
