Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman is under scrutiny for inconsistencies between his campaign finance disclosure reports and his actual bank statements. According to POLITICO, these discrepancies have been apparent since the spring but have intensified with recent findings.

A disclosure report submitted to the state Board of Elections earlier this month indicated that Blakeman's campaign had only $178,000 in the bank as of September 28. However, bank statements from TD Bank reveal that the campaign's checking account had a balance of $1.7 million on the same date. This stark contrast raises questions about the accuracy of his financial reporting.

Moreover, the bank records highlight numerous transactions that do not appear in the campaign finance filings. For instance, a check numbered 1156 was used to make a $13,500 payment on July 29, yet this transaction is absent from Blakeman's financial disclosures. Similarly, the bank statements indicate that actress Lois Robbins wired $18,000 to the campaign on September 2, a transaction that is not reflected in the official reports.

Blakeman is the first gubernatorial candidate in New York to engage in the new matching funds program, which allows him to access up to $3.5 million in public funds. This situation echoes the challenges faced by former Mayor Eric Adams, who was barred from a similar program last year due to discrepancies in his financial disclosures. The ongoing issues with Blakeman's reports are drawing attention from watchdog groups and raising concerns about transparency in campaign financing.
