20 Documentaries That Should Have Been Nominated for Best Picture

In the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards, not a single documentary has been nominated for the coveted Best Picture category. This glaring omission has sparked discussions about the value and impact of nonfiction films in the cinematic landscape. Documentaries can not only win their own Oscars but also significantly influence public discourse and become defining works of their time.

According to Variety, numerous documentaries have made a lasting impact on audiences and critics alike, yet they remain unrecognized in the top category. The list includes notable titles such as 'Hoop Dreams' and 'Flee,' both of which have garnered critical acclaim and contributed to important conversations in society.

The exclusion of documentaries from the Best Picture category raises questions about the Academy's criteria and the recognition of different filmmaking styles. While documentaries have their own dedicated awards, the lack of acknowledgment in the main categories suggests a persistent bias towards narrative features.

As the film industry evolves, the conversation around the value of documentaries continues to grow. The recognition of these films could not only honor their creators but also encourage more diverse storytelling in cinema. The industry and audiences alike may benefit from a reevaluation of what constitutes a 'best' film, potentially paving the way for future inclusivity in Oscar nominations.
